The 30th of June, last day of the month, the first leg of this adventure. These are some of the conclusions I’ve reached so far:
- Time really does fly when you’re having fun! It’s been 17 days since moving into my 19ft van, for better or worse, and so far it’s been good. There have been a few setbacks (water leak issues) and lessons learned (don’t leave the groceries on the floor and the van in the sun on a summer day if there is a 2 liter of soda in the bag because it may explode… all over everything)!
- “Doing Life Together” takes more than gathering for dinner an hour before church starts on Saturday night. Although that provides a good starting point, actually doing life together requires letting others into your world and taking the time to step into theirs. Walking through each other’s messes and joyfully sharing successes takes time and effort. For the year and a half I lived in a house alone, I spent my “spare time” watching movies. How much richer my life would be if I had spent that time investing in relationships.
- Intentionality! One of the Elders at my church speaks often of this and I’m beginning to grasp what he’s saying. We have a choice, we can just let life happen to us or we can be intentional in living it. This is not to say we are ever in control of anything at any time because there is only One who can make that claim. But I can be intentional in my decision to draw closer to God and to get closer to my brothers and sisters. I shouldn’t just expect it to happen because I like the idea of it.
I’m looking forward to July, but even more, I’m looking forward to today. That’s a new concept for someone who has spent most of life “Future Tripping.”
